Numerous legends and ghost stories surround Sinai, which has seen investigations by both Channel 4's Time Team and Living's Most Haunted. Reputedly, there is also a tunnel from the house to Burton Abbey... ![]() |
More than forty five ghosts from throughout history! The history of Sinai goes back to Roman times and maybe even earlier. The Saxons also used the location as a stronghold and, in Medieval times, the fortified manor of the de Schobenhale family held sway over the neighbourhood, collecting tithes and dispensing justice - including trials for witchcraft. The local gibbet was only a couple of fields away! Perhaps to secure their own salvation, the de Schobenhales gave Sinai Park to the monks of Burton Abbey, at the time one of the most significant monastic seats in England. They found an equally dramatic use for the place, building the present house to use for rest and recuperation after bloodletting. Page 1 of 3 > |
